Bedfordshire Schools Golf

The Boys and Girls team selected from the recent SE Schools Championships held at Leighton Buzzard earlier in the month excelled themselves at the England Schools U/18 Championships held at Belton Park GC, Lincs by taking the Regional Team title by a sizeable 28 pts overall.  Individually, 13 year old Roisin Scanlon (Bedford Girls and Bedfordshire GC) continued her successful season by gaining an International cap for the England Schools v Wales Schools match later in August.

Sadly Boys Champion Thomas Hawke's twin brother, Matthew, had to withdraw on the 17th hole of the practice round as he is informed by text that he has to isolate due to close covid contact at school.  Finlay Cummings (Bedford School and Beds & County GC) was contacted at 9-30 pm Sunday night as a reserve replacement for an unexpected late individual appearance.

In the morning round Roisin was six shots behind (75) SE team mate Olivia Lee (Buckinghamshire) who nearly broke the course record on 69, but bounced back in the afternoon to challenge for the Girls title.  She opened with two birdies and then followed that with three more around the turn on 9, 10 and 11, before adding a further three to total 8 in the round of 70 to finish 3rd overall.  A very spirited effort after so much golf over the last three weeks.

Arnav Arkanath (Buckinghamshire and Woburn Sands & Aspley Guise GC) was in contention after the morning round on 74, but fell away in the afternoon whilst Fin Cummings, playing his final game in County Schools golf before starting his US Scholarship in Arkansas, opened with an impressive 72 to lie 4th at lunchtime.  Barring a double lost ball on one hole, Fin's eventual 74, would have challenged for a top 3 finish.  In normal times, Fin would have been part of the SE Team, so it was pleasing to conclude schools golf on such a positive experience.
