Home Grown Players crowned Boys and Girls Regional Champions

Home grown players crowned Boys and Girls Regional Champions as Bedfordshire Schools host the South East Schools Championships at Leighton Buzzard Golf Club

The event which was restructured due to covid regulations saw Bedfordshire Juniors 18 year old Arnie Arkanath (Sir Henry Floyd School Milton Keynes / Woburn Sands & Aspley Guise Golf Club) and 13 year old Roisin Scanlon (Bedford Girls / Bedfordshire Golf Club) set the early pace with rounds of 68 for Arnie and 72 for Roisin.  Both scores could not be matched as the rain continued throughout the day.

Arnie finished one shot ahead of George Wright (Hertfordshire) 69, whilst Roisin remained 3 shots clear of her nearest rival Olivia Lee (Buckinghamshire) 75 to become one of the youngest recipients of the title. She is only the second Bedfordshire Schools Girls Champion since the event started in 1979 when Sarah Kiddle was the first Champion.  Both players now go forward to represent the South East Region in the National Championships at Belton Park Golf Club, Lincs at the end of June, in their quest for an international selection.  Roisin has also qualified as County Schools Champion to play in the National U/16 Schools Championship, due to be played at Walsall GC in late July.

In the Team Championship, Bedfordshire Schools Boys team (Finlay Cummings, Aidan Abbott, Lawrence Jefferys and Alex Robins) missed the title by the narrowest of margins, tying on 220 with Essex Schools and losing out by the discard score (80 to 77).  Both Finlay and Aidan in normal times would have gained places in the Regional team to go forward, but covid again restricted the team numbers this year, with Fin getting a 1st reserve placement.

Both Arnie and Roisin are pictured alongside LBGC's Captain Simon Rossiter as formal presentations were not permissible either.
